          THE FOUR HALLOWS

 OF

 THE HOLY GRAIL

The following gives a very brief description of the Four Hallows of the Holy Grail.  The images are beautiful and simple but they have very wide-ranging correspondences.  They are used as symbols for the elucidation of the legend of the Holy Grail.  I use the word legend here in the sense of both a story and a script; for the Holy Grail, when used in meditation, opens up access to a higher language than that based on conventional alphabets.  Here we learn the language of the soul.  It is also known as the secret or 'occult script'.  It is the language of initiation.

The Four Hallows of the Holy Grail are:

                                                   1.  Cup

                                                   2.  Lance

                                                   3.  Sword

                                                   4.  Stone

In the histories, stories, and legends of the Grail these four symbols figure in various ways.  However, they all point ultimately to the same thing:  the fullness of the being of man.

Human beings have a higher as well as a lower nature.  Only the lower part is usually known, because it is purely physical. The Higher Being is hidden or 'esoteric'.  It is only awakened or discovered through training, discipline, meditation, etc.

The Higher Being of man has been traditionally represented as a trinity; but ever since the annihilation of the Gnosis by the Roman Church in the 3rd century, little or no guidance has been available in conventional Christianity for an understanding of the Higher Being.  It exists only as a cold, theological formula, or 'article of faith' and has meaning to none but a few who are specifically trained to 'defend' it cerebrally.  This loss of knowledge of man's Higher Being has been a great loss to Christianity.

The Higher Being of man is a trinity and consists of 1) the etheric or life-body, which may also be called the mental or memory body;  2)  The astral (or emotional) body, which may also be called the soul; and 3) the Ego or 'I' which may also be called the spirit.  Thus man is composed of body, soul and spirit.

The God-like 'I' or the 'I Am' lies at the very core our being, and through it we can learn to identify our self with the highest, the Divinity.

Only one part of our overall being, the lowest, is physical.  The rest is spiritual. Thus, man is a being who can only be fully understood in a fourfold aspect.

The Four Hallows of the Holy Grail contain this esoteric teaching.

The  Higher Being of man is complex and cannot be understood merely through cerebral study, doctrines, articles of faith, etc. Intuition, creative imagination, and other aspects of our being must be allowed to play their part also.  The Four Hallows of the Grail have many correspondences which elucidate and bring to life the creative element in our soul.  They are the keys to the development of the hidden aspect of our overall being.
