WHAT IS THE HOLY GRAIL?

The Holy Grail is first an foremost a symbol.

Symbols exist in order to assist the logical mind in its function of ordering and understanding the varied phenomena of our world.

Of course, the human mind itself is one such and primary phenomenon; but unlike the natural objects that the mind encounters, symbols are actually inventions of the mind.  As such, they do not impart their meaning without a certain degree of contemplation.

The Holy Grail is primary a symbol of something which most people nowadays have difficulty understanding: the human soul.  Whereas what is meant by mind is readily understood, soul is open to much speculation, opinion and debate.  In fact, many people deny that the word refers to anything real, and so they dispense with it altogether.

This however is a mistake!  For, the soul is real; and one of the finest symbols that have ever been conceived for it is the Holy Grail.

The Holy Grail is the lost symbol of the human soul. It is also a symbol of spiritual unity.  When one makes an inner effort to understand the Holy Grail one comes also to realize that it is the focus of a mysterious spiritual movement.

This is what has always been known as the Quest for the Holy Grail

The Grail quest is about rediscovering the lost beauty of the human soul.

From time immemorial the human soul was considered to be feminine.  Apart form the first couple of centuries of Christianity, the time of The Gnosis, at the centre of which was the figure of the divine Sophia, this feminine aspect of spirituality was repressed in the West.

The legend of the Holy Grail represents that whereby this knowledge was kept alive imaginatively or esoterically.

In our time the Quest for the Holy Grail has begun again, but this time it is open to everyone.

And when one begins to understand what the Holy Grail is, one will also realize that because of its basically unifying spirit, it represents the source of the richest spiritual nourishment and healing available in the modern world.

This book offers a way of understanding the Holy Grail.

The approach adopted is based on a view of the human being as not just comprising a physical body alone, but as also having a higher spiritual being.  This latter can be experienced, studied and developed by taking up the Quest for the Holy Grail.

In his seminal masterpiece of esoteric knowledge and spiritual investigation, entitled An Outline of Occult Science, the modern Initiate, Rudolf Steiner wrote: ‘The pathway into the spiritual world culminates in the ‘Science of the Grail’.

But before we outline how, by taking up the Grail Quest we may come to know of our Higher Being, let us first look a little into the background of the Grail and its story.
